Subject: Addressing Escalator/Elevator Maintenance

The purpose of this memo is to promote the renovation and regular maintenance of the escalators and elevators in the North Academic Center(NAC) building. Seeing as this is the main building

on the campus, it is important that students and faculty are able to reach their destination as quickly as possible.

Summary

There are several elevators and escalators located throughout the NAC. However many of them are constantly either down for maintenance,or extremely slow in terms of the elevators or just not working. This becomes an inconvenience to those who have somewhere to be in the building. Personally, having many classes scattered through the higher floors, an unresponsive elevator can affect me getting to class on time. Plenty of students that have class in the NAC agree that this is a major hassle. I propose that there be a designated schedule for the upkeep and maintenance of both the escalators and elevators, especially on days where there is no class as to not distract the students. Whenever you become available, I would love to sit down and discuss this matter with you.

Discussion

Many students and faculty members would argue that these out of order lifts are not that big of an inconvenience and that they should not affect whether a student is tardy or not. However, this does not take into consideration having minutes to get to class while being several floors away, or someone with a disability having trouble getting to class on time. A regular upkeep schedule will allow things to run smoother than ever. This schedule could be weekly maintenance, or a schedule that aligns with CUNY holidays/off-days.

With the repairs to the lifts, this will improve the punctuality of students while also providing accessibility to those with disabilities. People in wheelchairs, those that use canes, struggle daily with walking etc., will benefit most from this, as these lifts are often their only mode of transporting from place to place. This will also create a smoother transition from class to class. This smooth transition accompanied with less hallway traffic, will make for a more efficient and well-ordered school environment.

I believe maintaining the lifts throughout the NAC will inspire other CUNY universities to follow and create a more efficient environment for their students. The image this will create for the City College of New York will be significant in that it will create a sense of care and attentiveness in regards to the universities population as well as to make sure that the college is running smoothly at all times.

Recommendation

I am thankful that you took the time to review this memo. If at any time you would like to conduct a meeting, I am available to discuss the information presented. I can be reached at [email protected] to set up a meeting and will attempt to include students and faculty who often have to be in the NAC building and experience the lack of fluidity while transitioning from one class to another. These people feel strongly about the matter and would like to witness a change in the near future.
